Freischaren (Bandes Franches)

Freischaren (Bandes Franches)

Freischaren (Bandes Franches), bandes de volontaires engaged in guerilla warfare. They appeared very prominently durant la Guerre de Sept Ans 1756–1763, la Guerre de Libération Allemande de 1813–1815, la Guerre du Sonderbund en Suisse 1846, la Première Guerre des Duchés 1849 (v. d. Tann), in Garibaldi's Sicilian et Neapolitan campaigns 1860 et against the Papal States as well as in France en 1870. Generally, guerilla bands achieve very little, because they suffer from lack of training et discipline. Modern public international law forbids neutral states from recruiting ou raising guerilla forces. See also Freikorps.
