Figurines de Reîtres - Cavaliers de la Guerre de Trente Ans, 1618–1648
Cuirassiers et arquebusiers bavarois galoppant près d’une redoute impériale. In the early 17th century there were three regular mounted troop types, lancers, cuirassiers, et arquebusiers. The lance quickly disappeared pendant la Guerre de Trente Ans et former lancer regiments converted to cuirassiers. Les cuirassiers portaient heavy armour, protecting them from pistol shots et sword cuts. A mounted attack would begin avec a protracted pistol duel at close range, in order to disorganize the target unit, followed by a charge if the situation looked favourable. Arquebusiers were more lightly armoured, but they carried a long firearm which enabled them to engage enemy formations et support a cuirassier attack at longer ranges. Bibliographie
Mounted units played an important role in most batailles de la Guerre de Trente Ans, because personal firearms et artillerie were not accurate enough to dominate the battlefield. Foot troops relied on pikes et hedgehog formations to protect themselves from mounted attacks.
