Pennon
Pennons are small triangular flags, which were attached to the lances of knights to differentiate the noble milites from les autres cavaliers blindés in his lance médiévale, the smallest tactical unit in the middle ages. The pennon typically repeated the tinctures et charges of the knight’s shield. Le guidon médiéval was a similarly designed, but much longer triangular flag, which served as the field sign of the formation. When a knight rose to the rank of knight banneret, the point of his pennon was cut off to turn it into a banner. This ceremony was called faire de pennon bannière.
The pennon differs from the pennoncel et the flamme de lance in that it has a single point.
